Information and communication technology trigger a plethora of linguistic issues regarding the nature of the emerging, mercurial medium of computer-mediated discourse (CMD). Using some selective linguistic features outlined in Biber’s Multi-Dimensional, Multi-Feature model (1988, 1995 and 2004), this study conducts a computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA), namely a microlinguistic analysis, of two computer-mediated communication (CMC) modes: web chat, a principal manifestation of synchronous CMC, and text messages, a principal manifestation of asynchronous CMC, from the perspectives of lexis, grammar and phonology. Findings showed that despite the different conditions of language production, including time, space and situations, of web chat and text messages, they share many linguistic features, with different frequencies, at the lexical, grammatical and phonological levels. Much of the differences between both modes are ascribed to users’ creativity, technological facilities, and communication situation.
Mobile phone text message technology has the potential to improve outcomes for patients with depression and co-morbid alcohol dependence syndrome. This study explores the feasibility of using supportive text messages to improve on mood and abstinence outcomes for patients with depression and comorbid alcohol dependence syndrome. Fifty four patients with both depression and alcohol dependence syndrome who completed an inpatient treatment programme were randomised into two groups. One group received twice daily supportive text messages for three months in addition to usual care while the other group received only one text message every fortnight thanking them for taking part in the study. Primary outcome measures included the Cumulative Abstinence Duration and Beck’s Depression Inventory scores at three and six months. Secondary outcomes included the Global Assessment of Function Scale scores at three and six months.
Kannel is a compact and very powerful open source WAP and SMS gateway, used widely across the globe both for serving trillions of short messages (SMS), WAP Push service indications and mobile internet connectivity. By using this you can implement your own bulk sms gateway server to send messages from web and receive sms from phone to web. It support different protocols for providing communication using different tools, e.g., CIMD, SMPP for third party service providers like clickatel, business sms etc and AT for mobiles and modems with your sim card. You can also send text messages, logos, audios etc to mobiles by using this gateway. It's used widely across the globe both for serving trillions of short messages (SMS), WAP Push service indications and mobile internet connectivity. It attempts to provide this essential part of the WAP infrastructure freely to everyone so that the market potential for WAP services, both from wireless operators and specialized service providers, will be realized as efficiently as possible. It's a great open source technology for those looking to venture in bulk sms provider services or as a corporate and group communication tool.

This study analyzes the gender difference in switching and mixing of the codes in English and Urdu languages in text messages composed by undergraduate students. The sample for this study was randomly collected and the research used the code switching and code mixing theories as tool of analysis. The research reveals that males and females do not considerably differ in the ways specified by cultural stereotypes. The result of the study is helpful in finding answers to the questions that may not be obtained through interviews and observations. It is found that males and female students tend to switch and mix to English for education and prestige and at the same time for euphemistic purposes. It suggests that extensive code-switching and code mixing may lead to entirely novel linguistic varieties.
Bandwidth availability in wireless communication systems remains a limiting factor. Protocol Specific Text Compression, concerned towards Optimization of Bandwidth usage, is a novel approach towards obtaining maximum compression. PSTC is an efficient, robust and scalable compression scheme. Protocols such as SIP, XML, HTTP etc. are ASCII text based signalling protocol. The text based nature results in long messages and will result in significant transmission delays because of the large message size and relatively low data rates across the radio interface. This makes signalling inefficient over bandwidth limited wireless channels. Protocol Specific Text Compression (PSTC) is a compression technique for the optimization of long ASCII text based messages and has therefore the potential to improve the throughput.

Web mining, which is used to mine web information, is one of the uses of data mining techniques. Web mining can be divided into three main kinds based on the type of mined web data. . First, web content mining which is used to mine the web pages content that are in the form of text, video or images. Second, web structure mining which is used to mine the structured data and get out information from these data. Finally, web usage mining which is concerned with mining the user behavior and his navigation activities through navigation analysis and click stream. Moreover, Web mining process includes four main steps which are: Information Retrieval, Information Extraction, Generalization, and Analysis. Furthermore, Web mining has different techniques such as clustering, Association rule and visualization.
This book is the result of three years of research by the author to build an intelligent system to provide semantic support for Persian Learners of English. To do so, computational description of Persian Morphology and Syntax has been included. The system constructs semantic representations of the content of both the original English sentences as well as students'' translations as input text. It then compares the discourse states that result from the source text and the target text and reports on a range of mismatches. It is shown that by adding a CALL component to the language teaching system, it is possible to analyze original English sentences and the students'' translations and compare their semantic content using logical forms to provide diagnostic information about lexical and semantic errors made by students.
Text messaging is a popular way of communicating with friends and family. Short messages with limited character space, sending text messages (or SMS) is revolutionizing the way people spell and altering the linguistic landscape. The author has argued that text messaging is changing the way in which men and women have traditionally communicated. Analyzing gender-defined messages , he found that women are writing longer messages, using more emoticons and abbreviations."In the linguistic marketplace there have always been different values associated with standard and non-standard language, and here we have found results that are paradoxical, that are the opposite of the recognized socio-linguistic gender patterns."Research has established that traditionally, women use standard language more than men, perhaps because it is seen as a way to acquire upward mobility: "Women have historically used standard language when they are social aspirers, or want to be perceived as above their station," Herring said. Men tend to talk more in public moreover, whereas women typically stay silent and are more polite.
