Coffee has always been a commodity of great importance for the Global South. After the collapse of the International Coffee Agreement in 1989, the global coffee price plummeted. During the coffee crisis, the fair trade brand began to take form. This new form of activism, which encouraged consuming certain products, instead of boycotting them, developed with a promise of helping the Global South. This book explores the effect of fair trade coffee on households and communities in the Kagera region in North-West Tanzania. This book sheds light on how fair trade works within the coffee industry, what parts of the fair trade system which is effective and what external forces limit the full effect of fair trade.
This study explores fair trade in the South African wine sector. It was motivated by different opinions with regard to fair trade products and the international trading system, as well as personal interest in how to improve the lives of the workers in the South, especially women. Although more fair trade would not improve the lives of all the poor people in countries in the South, it can be a beginning of ending this major problem as well as making the international trading system more equal. Although this study was limited by time and length, it gives the reader an insight in how production of fair trade wine in South Africa is different than other non-fair trade production.
The aim of the thesis was to examine which factors influence Danish consumers' intentions to purchase fair trade coffee, and how the understanding of these factors could help the marketing of fair trade products in the Danish market. The thesis is based on an existing theory and an empirical study of consumers' intentions to purchase fair trade coffee. A theoretical part is included in the thesis, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and previous studies in the field of ethical consumption, which are mostly in relation to fair trade consumption. The purpose of the thesis was to generate knowledge about the consumers' intentions to purchase fair trade coffee through an understanding of the influences, which affect the consumers during the fair trade purchasing situation. The analysis shows that Danish consumers' intentions to purchase fair trade coffee is influenced by the attitudes the consumers hold toward performing the action, the social pressure of a consumer's environment, and last but not least the idea of being a morally concerned individual.
