In macro-, meso- and micro-economic systems, the concept of innovation involves a variety of resources and functions. It includes all formal and informal institutions, networks and actors that influence innovation and act as innovation boosters within companies, at the territorial level, at the level of innovation networks or in national economies. This book deals with innovation in a globalized context in terms of the entrepreneur, enterprise, territorial and sectoral systems and national systems of innovation in which collective innovation processes are formed.
Innovations in the public services have become mandatory to provide more efficient and secured services to the citizens. In today’s fast changing technological environment, the sustained management of innovation is the most vital executive task for the organizations. Identification of the technological innovation process is required in order to manage innovation in the public organizations. The relationships between outsourcing and innovation performance in the UK furniture manufacturing industry are investigated in this study. This study contributes to the discourse by showing that innovation performance is affected by outsourcing decisions. First, outsourcing peripheral activities has no impact on innovation. Second, performing core activities does have a positive influence on innovation performance. Furthermore, the findings support previous documented relationship found between capabilities and product and process innovation by revealing key enablers, which are particular to the furniture industry. There is a strong correlation between customer-focus strategies and innovation performance. Furniture manufacturers are attuned to customer design preferences through critical buyer channels. Other key findings highlight the association between firm size and innovation and the importance of innovation capabilities for medium size firms.
