On December 3, 1976, just before the Jamaican general election and two days before Bob Marley was to play the Smile Jamaica Concert to ease political tensions in Kingston, seven unnamed gunmen stormed the singer's house, machine guns blazing. The attack wounded Marley, his wife, and his manager, and injured several others. A Brief History of Seven Killings is James's fictional exploration of that dangerous and unstable time in Jamaica's history and beyond. Deftly spanning decades and continents and peopled with a wide range of characters--assassins, drug dealers, journalists, and even ghosts--James brings to life the people who walked the streets of 1970s Kingston, who dominated the crack houses of 1980s New York, and who reemerged into a radically altered Jamaica of the 1990s.
One outcome of globalization is that distance education is fast becoming the major provider of tertiary education in low-income, post-colonial countries. Jamaica has become a heavy importer of distance education and there is concern that this may have an adverse effect on the goals of the local education system. Education has always been used to instill national identity, to create national harmony and to foster cultural development. Do distance education providers share these interests? The Jamaica Masters Online Project is a collaborative effort between the Ohio State University and the Edna Manley College, to create a culturally responsive program of professional development for Jamaican art educators, using distance modalities. This review examines the complexities, challenges, processes and strategies involved in its development. It provides a foundation for understanding Jamaica's cultural concerns in the current global environment; the need for culturally relevant art education programs; and the value of art education as a site of resistance against global pressures.

The problem was to determine the extent to which patients were satisfied with the care they received at the University and Community Health Centres. In observing both International and Local trends regarding the rising cost of health care services , coupled with the increasing demands of patients, it is imperative that care and services offered and received are sustainable and in keeping with the expectation of the patients. As such, this book will highlight ways in which patients can become active partners in their care, thereby increasing their satisfaction and confidence in the health system. The target groups were patients accessing care and services at two Primary Health Care Centres located on the compound of the university of the West Indies ,Mona Jamaica .
NP-complete problem is a fascinating kind of problem because till now no one has discovered the polynomial-time algorithm to solve it and also no one has proved that no polynomial-time algorithm can exist for any NP-complete problem. It is an open research problem since it was first posed in 1971 to prove P?NP. This book specially focused on two NP-complete problems. 1. N-Queens problem: In Year 1848 chess player Max Bezzel had first time propose this problem in the form of 8-queens problem. And more than 100 year researcher try to solve n-queens problem but it’s still not completely solved. One implement algorithm describe in this book, which is able to provide one unique solution of n-queen problem in quadratic time. 2. Sum of subset problem: It is another NP-complete problem and one implement algorithm describe in this book which is able to provide all the solution to sum of subset problem and it takes less number of steps as compare to backtracking naive algorithm.

This book deals with the natural antioxidants and their properties. It mainly concenterated on the antioxidants in fruits. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidant compounds.Natural products such as phenolic- flavonoids and phenolic acids, carotenoids, vitamins are having antioxidant properties. These natural antixidant products show many biological and pharmacological activities including anti cancer, anti inflammatory , anti viral effects etc. This book mainly deals with the antioxidant properties and its pharmacological properties of an elaeocarpaceae fruit called Muntingia calabura (JAMAICA CHERRY).

There is no looking glass here and I don't know what I am like now...Now they have taken everything away. What am I doing in this place and who am I. If Antoinette Cosway, a spirited Creole heiress, could have foreseen the terrible future that awaited her, she would not have married the young Englishman. Initially drawn to her beauty and sensuality, he becomes increasingly frustrated by his inability to reach into her soul. He forces Antoinette to conform to his rigid Victorian ideals, unaware that in taking away her identity he is destroying a part of himself as well as pushing her towards madness. Set against the lush backdrop of 1830s Jamaica, Jean Rhys' powerful, haunting masterpiece was inspired by her fascination with the first Mrs Rochester, the mad wife in Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.
Tourism is the largest source of employment and the second largest source of foreign exchange in Jamaica. As the industry has become strategically vital, it is expected that Government planning would reflect this importance. However mass tourism has been welcomed, which sees the number of arrivals as its main tracking indicator of success. This can be attributed to a lack of planning and strategic management. Improper planning in this sector is a major concern. This book suggests that a properly planned and regulated tourism sector can facilitate the non-consumptive use of natural resources and produce incomes that are greater and more sustainable. Also, there is a direct link between growth in the industry and positive change on the human development indicators, and the level of socio-economic development is very uneven, even in communities where the industry has been well developed. The book suggests that a more coherent approach to planning tourism development on the South Coast could provide more direct benefits to local people while simultaneously reducing its negative socio-economic and environmental impacts, thereby generating significantly greater benefits for Jamaica
Pyke returns in a gripping tale of brutal murder and deception, set in the back streets of Victorian London and the cane fields of Jamaica. London: 1840. The economy is sliding into recession; gangs of unemployed workers roam the streets; and a murderer prowls the capital's poor neighbourhoods. Pyke, still grieving over the death of his wife and struggling to shoulder his responsibilities as a father, is in debtors' prison, having lost his home and reached the edge of bankruptcy. Fitzroy Tilling, now head of the new Metropolitan Police Force gives Pyke his freedom, but in return he must agree to investigate the brutal death of a young mulatto woman, who was apparently working as a prostitute. It is not long before another woman turns up dead, and Pyke begins to suspect that he has stumbled on something more sinister, and more far-reaching than the murder of a couple of prostitutes...Pyke's investigation takes him from the London docks to the sugar plantations of Jamaica, from a fading colonial mansion to the back-streets of the East End in a struggle against ambitious and ruthless enemies, as well as demons of his own.
Public health care workers are particularly vulnerable to high levels of workplace violence and stress imbedded in volatile communities and work environments. These factors can impact negatively on the health status of these individuals and on health care delivery in general. The incidence of violence against community public health care workers in Jamaica or in developing countries has not been well studied. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of societal violence on the delivery of public health care, by looking at the impact/effects on public health workers at six health centres. The study specifically examined the prevalence, types, nature and effects of violence; identified causes, signs and sources of stress, coping skills and general responses and attitudes to violence amongst health care workers who delivered health care to clients. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a high prevalence of violence against healthcare workers in the form of verbal abuse, which contributes significantly to their source of stress at work. Interventions are needed to reduce stress in the work environment of health care workers, so as to make health-care delivery more effective.
