Apart from high cost, increased concern for environmental and health hazards has called for a reduction in the use of synthetic nematicides for nematode control.In vitro studies in Petri dishes showed that castor bean extracts had toxic effect on eggs and juveniles of root–knot nematodes. Egg hatch inhibition and juvenile mortality decrease with increased dilution of the extract. With an increase in exposure time, juvenile mortality increased.Trials were conducted to observe the effect of the extract on root-knot nematode and some growth parameters of tomato plant in pot. Seedlings either dipped, side-drenched or a combination of both with different concentrations of castor bean extracts showed that plant height, stem girth, fresh shoot and root weights of extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control plants. Numbers of root-knot juveniles and galls on the roots of the extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control. The crude castor bean extract was nematotoxic to root-knot nematodes in vitro and potted tomato.This study should help shed light on the use of botanicals in managing plant parasitic nematodes on vegetables
In Ethiopia, people locally use the roots of Gnidia stenophylla Gilg (GSG) (Thymelaeaceae) to cure an array of diseases including malaria and malaria-related symptoms with no literature evidence substantiating its safety. This book, therefore, provides new literature evidence regarding the safety of using GSG aqueous root extract as a traditional remedy. The book also addresses the effect of the plant extract on body weight, food intake, hematological and biochemical parameters as well as on gross and histopathological changes of gastrointestinal tract (GIT), spleen, liver and kidney tissues after acute and chronic oral administration in Swiss albino mice. The aqueous extract mimics the traditional decoction dosage form of GSG as an antimalarial herbal remedy.
To promote the perennial and ubiquitous stinging nettle as a profitable source for aphid management programs in agro-ecosystems, it is of primary importance that the diversity and seasonal abundance of aphids and their natural enemies are known. For this purpose, agricultural and semi-natural habitats were investigated over two full cropping seasons in Gembloux, Belgium. Our field data support the strategies aimed to exploit stinging nettle habitats as important reservoir for aphidophagous insects that tended to occur early on this marginal plant, before attacking aphids in adjacent field crops. Moreover, our findings suggest that stinging nettle habitat offers many important requisites for the survival of natural enemies, such as alternative prey that are not available persistently in annual cultures. Our data on the spatial distribution of aphid predators have identified varied influences, such as the food preferences and intraguild interactions. For natural enemy population management, promising results were obtained from our behavioural bioassays. As a conclusion, stinging nettles can play important roles in agro-ecosystems.
The root of Rotula aquatica, belongs to the family Borogenaceae is also known as pasanbed. It is found in India in in river bed of Netravati, Assam and through out hilly regions of central and southern India. Its various parts are highly regarded for their medicinal properties in the indigenous systems of medicine. Plants contain many active constituents and the utility of a crude drug is due to its therapeutically active constituent, so it is necessary to isolate particular compound of interest.Authenticated samples of the root of Rotula aquatica were subjected to pharmacognostic studies. Successive extraction by different solvents was carried out, followed by phytochemical screening to determine the type of constituents present in different extracts. Isolation of phytoconstituents by column chromatography was carried out with methanol extract. The isolated compounds were characterized by U.V. IR, NMR and LCMS. Results of anthelmintic activity indicated that ethanol and pet-ether extract has moderate antioxidant activity.
The Croton Macrostachys is used for the treatment of malaria, venereal diseases, cough,diabetes, constipation, tape worms and hepatitis. Following this, several compounds have been isolated and identified from the different parts of the plant. The present study is designed for the extraction, isolation and structural elucidation of compounds from methanol extract of the root bark of Croton Macrostachys. TLC has been used for the identification of the various components. Column chromatographic separation of the crude methanol extract using different solvent system with increasing polarities resulted in isolation of various compounds. Of those isolated compounds, with appropriate amount, structural elucidation was performed for two of them (compound CM-6 and CM-10) using spectroscopic techniques: UV-Vis, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, DEPT-135 and 2D NMR (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC).
